In 1988, we decided that we would like a mediun to large dog, and so the search began. Gail and myself did not want the usual dog, Rotts, Dobs, German Shepherd, although they are all very nice and if bred right should have good temperments they were not what we wanted.
A year or so earlier I had seen a 'fawn' coloured dog walking along the Banks of the Lagan in Belfast, on enquiring of the owner, was told the breed - Rhodsian Ridgeback - and given a quick history of the breed.
So, going one stage further, the book buying, in Belfast they were few and far between but I was able to purchase - Guide to the Rhodesian Ridgeback. This was the dog for us.
Fortunately, Linda McElhinney, had put an advert in the Belfast Telegraph. She had only one bitch left, the 'runt'. One Sunday we took the trip from Comber to Navan with are two young children and 8year old Min. Long Dachshund. We fell in love straight away with the 9 week old whirl wind. On the way home, Melrose Shareef Dancer, was given the name Sheena, the love affair with this breed had begun. If we had known then what indeed we know now, would we have gone to Navan - YES
